So today is the 21st of May, and this means there are just three months until I set out from Land’s End. It doesn’t seem very far way.
Since yesterday’s ride we have been soaked in amazing sunshine and this has made the cycling an absolute dream. Yesterday evening I was glad to have company from Simon Williams for a nice lumpy ride through the Cotswolds. We rested momentarily at Castle Combe and hoped to catch a glimpse of the weekly race night. Sadly we arrived much too early to see anything more than bare tarmac. So we continued on through the quiet lanes, passing through very quaint Cotswold villages and some spectacular countryside. Wiltshire is host to some of the most remarkable old villages, such as Castle Combe and Lacock – places so old in appearance that it seems wrong passing through and seeing cars. The buildings are all so aged that the roof of each building is wrinkled and warped; the result of centuries (guessing) of being stood in all conditions. Riding through these interesting places helps pass the miles: yesterday’s total being another 200 miles.
So after those 200 miles in the saddle, I was treated to a wonderful meal. I love finishing a long ride and being able to eat straight away. A large bowl of cereal or a packet of jaffa cakes is what I usually settle for, but to have a full meal cooked for me was something of a luxury!
Today, although there are only three months until the start, I am riding a very comfortable 50 miles, and not particulalry fast at that. Tomorrow, though, sees me knocking on the door of 200 again before a lovely planned group ride on Sunday through the Chew Valley (which has a fantastic cafe stop planned… therefore I agreed!!).
So, 3 months and it’ll all be on the road.
